MEET THE WINNERS OF OUR 2008 HAND DRUM COMPETITION!
Alex Alvarez
FIRST PLACE HAND DRUM SINGER
After two days of drumming, including a tie-breaking song on day one, Alex Alvarez walked away with a $500 cash prize and his pick of hand drums from The Drum People. Alex is Muskogee Creek, from the Poarch Creek Reservation in Alabama (the only federally recognized Creek Nation out of Oklahoma). Alex wanted to be a rock star and also honor his cultural heritage. Hand drumming gives him a chance to do both, as he learned from the cheers and admiration of hundreds of spectators in Cartersville, GA on October 12, 2008, when he sang his victory song!
SECOND PLACE WINNER OF HAND DRUM CONTEST
Otter Big Mountain sang songs inspired by his Cree roots in Saskatchewan, Canada. Otter and his family perform professionally at Native American powwows and festivals aroung the country. Brought up singing and dancing, Otter's talents are many. We have watched this young man grow up and were proud to present him with the $300 cash prize and a hand drum for his awesome singing in the hand drum competition. He told Alex: "there will be another day."

THIRD PLACE WINNERS
Jake Chappell and Daniel Dean teamed up to take third place in the competition and shared the $200 cash prize. Each also got to pick a hand drum provided by The Drum People. We have known these young men since they were boys. Always hanging around the drum arbor, they paid close attention to their elders and picked up some good pretty licks. Their winning song, which was written by Jake, expressed his feelings about losing a brother.
