Five Color Modified Star Quilt Drum Bag: Denim with blues and yellows
Lakota Star Quilt Drum Bag
Over the years customers have asked if I would create a Lakota Star drum bag. Since I have quit painting, I began to quilt. In a little consignment shop in Rapid City, SD, I found a beautiful star quilt and I bought it to learn how to make this pattern. I finally made one. I will be adding more photographs as I make more Lakota Star Drum Bags.
According to the Elders, native americans from the Great Plains replaced their Ceremonial Buffalo Robes with the Star Quilt. Native people give star quilts at births, deaths, marriages, and these quilts are present at many traditional ceremonies.
Although I am not native, and not Lakota, I used the star quilt made by a Lakota woman (the one I bough at the consignment shop) to study her methods. Another native american friend, Ignatius Jackson, has shared photos of his mother and grandmother's star quilts with me. As I teach Ignatius how to do peyote beadwork, he is helping me learn to sew Star Quilts. It is with great joy and respect that I offer these bags to customers.
Choose your own colors, the number of rows. Make this sacred Star Quilt your own unique drum bag.
